The Tech Oversight Project Calls Out OpenAI’s AI Super PAC Lies
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, The Tech Oversight Project called out OpenAI’s outright lies about the role it played in creating Leading the Future, the AI super PAC spending millions to block the strongest AI safety measures and stop pro-safety candidates from ever reaching Congress. OpenAI’s President Greg Brockman and his wife have so far contributed $25 million, roughly one-third of the $75 million Leading the Future has raised.
This isn’t the first time OpenAI has tried to create a buffer between itself and Leading the Future. Just weeks ago, OpenAI’s chief political strategist, Chris Lehane, also tried to do the same, saying, “That’s not OpenAI.” Contrary to this, Leading the Future is actually the brainchild of Chris Lehane, self-styled master of disaster, and the organization is run by Josh Vlasto, who also helped Lehane spearhead Fairshake, the pro-crypto super PAC that spent heavily to defeat Democrats in the 2024 cycle.
“OpenAI’s political team surely cannot expect us to buy the idea that the super PAC conceived by its political strategist and then funded and launched by its president is somehow not doing the bidding of the company itself. Leading the Future is spending tens of millions of dollars to block candidates that would enact the strongest, most transparent AI safety laws, which OpenAI also opposes. They are two sides of the same coin,” said Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of The Tech Oversight Project.
